What is TRAUMA?

“The body-mind-spirit’s response to life threatening or perceived life threatening experience that doesn’t fully sequence through the body.”

Katie Asmus of Somatic Nature Therapy Institute

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) “is the development of characteristic symptoms following exposure to one or more traumatic event.”

DSM-5, p.274, 2013

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD, sometimes hyphenated C-PTSD) is a stress-related mental disorder generally occurring in response to complex traumas, i.e., commonly prolonged or repetitive exposures to a series of traumatic events, within which individuals perceive little or no chance to escape.

Trauma can disrupt your sleep, eating habits, and relationships, often manifesting as depression, anxiety, ADHD, addiction, and other emotional and behavioral issues. Carrying this burden alone is not only difficult but unnatural. Processing these traumatic events is crucial to prevent them from continuously affecting your mind and overall well-being. Research indicates that trauma can alter the brain’s size, function, and even visual perception when compared to non-traumatized individuals.

Certain professions are particularly susceptible to trauma, as they involve constant exposure to traumatic events and stories. This includes teachers, therapists, police officers, military personnel, social workers, foster parents, nurses, firefighters, construction workers, tow truck drivers, bartenders, and hairstylists. Trauma can impact anyone, whether directly or indirectly, making it challenging to discuss these experiences with loved ones. We provide a safe space for you to share these stories, so you don’t have to carry them alone.

Ignoring trauma leads to a continuous attempt to escape it, often without realizing what you’re running from. True healing requires confronting and processing these internal struggles. We are here to help you navigate this journey, enabling you to make healthier choices and find happiness. Our goal is to support you in moving forward and rediscovering joy in life.
